ABSTRACT

Research on European–Taiwan relations basically comes from three sources: European scholars, Taiwanese scholars and a few scholars in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The topic has not enjoyed a lot of attention in other countries like the US or Japan; and even in Europe, Taiwan and the PRC, the number of specialized publications on European–Taiwan relations has been limited. On the political level, European and/or EU relations with Taiwan have also played a minor role on all three sides, and they have been treated mainly within the broader context of European China policy and EU–China relations. Thus, in most works on European–Taiwan relations, the PRC is either explicitly or implicitly a central third actor.
