ABSTRACT

Entrepreneurship is widely perceived by national governments as an appropriate vehicle for increasing economic and societal value. As such, attempts are made to nurture and foster individuals’ engagement in entrepreneurship. One way to do so is by the use of role models. Entrepreneurial role models play a vital role in stimulating individuals to ‘elaborate anticipatory scenarios of their own future career and identity’ (Radu and Loué, 2008, p. 445). Thus far, two prominent approaches have been used to explain role modelling: social learning theories and role identification theories (Gibson, 2006).
