ABSTRACT

Women-owned firms represent an important segment of the business sector. The data reveal that there were nearly 10 million women-owned firms generating $1.6 trillion in revenues in 2012 (2012 Survey of Business Owners). In spite of their impressive gains over the course of the last decade, however, women-owned firms continue to comprise a minority of all firms (36%). Further, they generate a relatively small percentage of total revenues (4.8%), employment (7.8%), and payroll (4.6%) (ibid).
