When the Americans declared independence, they faced the challenge of besting a formidable, well-trained professional British military. Though determined, they were outmatched in men, money, weapons, supplies, and other needs. Outside military and financial support was absolutely critical to the Revolution’s success. Ultimately, in no small part due to the diplomacy of Benjamin Franklin, the French were persuaded to come to the Americans’ aid.
