ABSTRACT

The health workforce represents one of the most important determinants of population health since ‘in health systems, workers function as gatekeepers and navigators for the effective or wasteful application of all other resources such as drugs, vaccines and supplies’ [1]. Under the changing health scenario in Asia, developing an appropriate health workforce, including a public health workforce, has become of utmost priority for the governments and health systems across Asian countries. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the current state of the public health workforce in Asia followed by an analysis of the current state of public health education instruction and institutions.
