Abstract

Literature confronts us with the question of what it knows and of what kind of knowledge it may be said to yield. What does it mean to say that an author or a work ‘knows’ something or allows us to know it? Does such a text reveal something about the world that is otherwise unknown? Is it knowledge that we gain in reading a poem or novel, in watching or reading a play? Does the overall sum of human wisdom increase when a poet pens a sonnet or a novelist completes a new work?
