ABSTRACT

The chapter shows how missionaries of the Christian religion supported Africans in opposing the Central African Federation of Northern Rhodesia and the struggle for self-rule. The chapter also examines post-colonial Zambia in terms of the relationship between religion and political parties in the first, second and third republics. The chapter highlights the point that while, generally, the clergy in the mainline churches are divided over politics, Pentecostal ‘big men’ and women are not so divided and have supported politicians claiming to be ‘born again’ Christians.
