Abstract

This chapter describes the state of emotional intelligence (EI) in the modern work environment. Interest in EI goes back almost 100 years. EI has continued to be a popular concept starting from the mid-1990s when it became a flavorful concept in business and management consulting. EI is closely linked to individual wellbeing of workers and positive organizational outcomes. This chapter describes EI, highlighting key contributions, controversies, and future implications at the workplace. The chapter starts by describing EI, the importance of EI at the workplace, and the significance of EI in the changing work environment. Next is the impact of national culture on EI. Following is a description of different aspects of work that relate to EI; these are emotional labor, individual competence, and technology. The chapter concludes with a discussion of controversies surrounding the concept and the future of EI at the workplace.
