ABSTRACT

This chapter serves to provide a brief background of research types and statistical approaches that are commonly used in the literature assessing tourism impacts. Researchers studying tourism impact employ qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods techniques, which are each independently reviewed and discussed, along with details on how each has been applied to assess tourism impacts. The qualitative domain is represented by exploring methodology including case study approaches, and the quantitative domain is represented through discussion on statistical techniques ranging from frequencies and descriptive statistics through advanced methods such as structural equation modeling and regression, and mixed methodology research is noted as it effectively combines the qualitative and quantitative approaches. How each technique has been utilized in the tourism impact literature is provided as well. The chapter closes with a review of the techniques and recommendations for future applications of methods that may help in further exploring the impact of tourism.
