ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to describe the work of the International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO), a programme organised under the auspices of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). It does this by initially establishing a generic context that indicates the goals and the extent of that programme as it was at the beginning of 2018. In doing so, it briefly indicates the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations within which the INSTO initiative is nested. It then specifically describes the way the programme can contribute to planning by focusing on the INSTO organised by the University of Waikato Management School at Raglan in New Zealand.
