ABSTRACT

Palenque combines a fascinating history of very detailed events resulting from the translation and recent interpretation of written narratives left in stone or other media by the original inhabitants of the ancient city. These interpretations that speak to long-term processes contributed by archaeological research. This is one of the most outstanding features offered by the study of a site like Palenque to the broader knowledge of the Pre-Hispanic Maya civilization. In this chapter, the last 10 years of archaeological exploration within the urban core is combined with systematic regional studies that allow a better interpretation of the political and economic context in which this important city developed and thrived for so many centuries.
