Abstract

This chapter is intended for arts and cultural managers seeking practical techniques to build more diverse, equitable, and inclusive arts organizations. The chapter reviews the history of inequities in arts and cultural practice in the U.S., describes strategies being used by a variety of organizations to implement diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs, and offers recommendations for arts and cultural managers to ensure their organizations are more diverse, equitable and inclusive. The chapter references current literature on DEI as well as interviews with arts leaders across the country, identifying opportunities for working at the personal, organizational, and community level.
