Abstract

This chapter examines the strategic staffing process for arts and cultural organizations. It focuses on the initial phases of the hiring process, bringing attention to ways that organizations can be both strategic and equitable as they engage in one of the most common, yet difficult, human resources functions. By introducing cost-effective and scalable ways to gather the information necessary to hire the right candidate successfully, this chapter provides readers with tactics that can be used at small and mid-sized organizations, which are routinely left out of human resource management literature. The chapter concludes with insights into how staffing in the arts and cultural sector has changed in recent years and areas where change is still needed in order for organizations to ensure that they are prepared to achieve shifting organizational goals while reflecting the communities they serve.
