ABSTRACT
While Philadelphia may not be perceived as the center of the twenty-first-century art world, being the site of the first art school in America—Charles Wilson Peale’s Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1805—should not be seen as surprising. The city was home to many of the emerging nation’s important educational institutions, and the achievement of its artisans led some to promote the city as the “Athens of the Western World.” 1
