ABSTRACT

A song from Funkadelic’s 1971 album Maggot Brain, a seven-track trip to funk’s dark side, begins by talking about the afterlife of a relationship. Sung by many voices, but speaking from the singular, it describes a broken promise of love. But instead of condemning the heartbreaker, Funkadelic asks listeners to face reality and relate. The chorus repeats a question about understanding and affinity: “Can you get to that?”
