ABSTRACT

This chapter studies the subjective wellbeing of the P’urhépecha people in Mexico. During the past decades some P’urhépecha communities have undergone a process of social transformation and integration into the market-driven economy. A domains-of-life approach is used to study the explanatory structure of wellbeing and the impact of the modernization process. The life satisfaction of those who remain closely attached to the original values and traditions of the P’urhépecha relies heavily on satisfaction with the family, health and spiritual domains of life; while the economic, occupational and health domains are relevant for those who have (partially) lost their P’urhépecha identity.
