ABSTRACT

Native North American populations, including American Indian and Alaska Native peoples, have inhabited North America for thousands of years. Traditional lifestyles and values have been influenced through generations of colonization and acculturation, which contribute in part to the high prevalence of chronic diseases observed in these populations today. Health disparities include high prevalence of overweight/obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. Factors including socioeconomic status, access to healthy foods and medical care, and nutrition and physical activity transitions continue to act as barriers to improved health status. However, strong cultural values, resilience, and partnership with health organizations and researchers present opportunities for improved health status within these populations.
