ABSTRACT

The chapter provides an overview of perspectives in IPE based on Marxist traditions, often called structuralist perspectives. Recent trends in academic debate have led to the term, Critical International Political Economy (CIPE), being preferred. The chapter starts by presenting key elements of Marx’s critical political economy. Based on these, it shows how this concept has been adapted for the analysis of international political economy. A central element of the chapter is the presentation of the ontological fundamentals and the methodological perspectives in CIPE. Furthermore, specific theoretical strands in CIPE and their possible applications are presented. The chapter also shows how these different approaches are related to each other. Finally, conclusions are drawn.
