ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses about relevance of industrial policies for the economic development of Latin American countries (LA). Although the experiences in development are not replicable, some successful Asian experiences are mentioned. In this strand, with suitable institutional frameworks oriented to build specific capacities in the region, and with the application of a rejuvenated industrial policy, LA could create the structural changes required to raise its productivity and thus improve the quality of life of its citizens. As neoliberal recommendations have not generated the expected results, it is necessary to form a new economic policy in which the role of state agencies for productive promotion is revalued. So, the development of a new industrial policy should take into account the strengthening of State-Owned Enterprises as well as the promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises in the space of public policy.
