ABSTRACT

Looking at modernism and postmodernism through an inter-American lens this entry is foremost comparative and in a second instance relational. It is an ambitious endeavor to discuss both terms within a hemispheric dimension within the Americas. Still, the debates around modernism and postmodernism not only reflect differently perceived divisions and connections between cultural productions North and South but they also reveal congruent and colliding imaginaries about the South and the North in their relation to modernity and postmodernity and beg for further investigation. Due to the limited space in the handbook format at hand, this entry puts emphasis on literary examples to discuss modernism and postmodernism avoiding equally important issues like the arts, music, and architecture.
