ABSTRACT
Comics (historietas in Spanish; histórias em quadrinhos in Portuguese) are a multimodal medium and art form that combines graphic storytelling with written text in culturally codified ways. In comic theory, this combinatory aspect is regarded as a defining feature of comics, along with the sequentiality of the comic narrative. In the words of comic-theory pioneer Scott McCloud, a comic can be defined as a “juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or to produce an aesthetic response in the viewer” (1994, 9).
