ABSTRACT
This introductory chapter reviews research on state recognition and summarises the contents and contributions of this handbook. The book discusses recognition of states as part of broader debates on international law, political theory, international relations, and comparative area studies. As this handbook provides the first comprehensive and multidisciplinary overview of state recognition, the chapter demonstrates the significance of both epistemic complementarity and examination of previously ignored theories and practices on statehood and recognition.
