ABSTRACT

The continued evolution of Internet-based technologies has facilitated extremist groups’ communicative practices in several ways. As these communication technologies have emerged and proliferated, the potential for violent radicalization among vulnerable individuals to whom extremist groups had previously lacked access has also grown. To address this perpetual threat, analysts, researchers, and policymakers must make use of Internet technologies for strategies geared toward countering violent extremism (CVE). This chapter discusses some of these approaches to online CVE, with a particular focus on ideology- and communication-based efforts.
