ABSTRACT
It is time to think about the efficacy of security in our collective digital accumulation habits. The facility with which we can digitize, replicate, and distribute security-related information, through and across socio-technical networks, has resulted in profound shifts in how we conceptualize formerly tidy notions of memory, privacy, and permanence. Recent data breaches and new legislative measures point to a crossroads in the fields of communication, digital memory, and security studies. This chapter explores the discursive landscape surrounding digital memory in order to classify perceived threats, and analyze emergent security solutions. I offer several examples involving Equifax, Yahoo!, and Starva to consider what it means to secure digital memory.
