ABSTRACT

This chapter relates the problems of overcrowding in remote Indigenous communities, and its effects on health, to increasing urban density. In the Australian context, this chapter acknowledges the lack of appropriate public amenity in public spaces for the increasing number of citizens who rely on public space for some of their daily activities in the urban setting. It then shows how a design approach applied in remote Indigenous communities can be implemented in urban settings to improve environmental public health and equitable access to basic amenities in public space. The chapter draws attention to the similarities in the issues facing regional and urban households and proposes some solutions.
