ABSTRACT

When I was first presented with the title for this chapter, ‘who is the audience for the medical/health humanities?’, I realised that I had previously only given superficial thought to this question. We, of course, work hard on promoting our various educational offerings and events, hoping for ‘good attendance’ (considered variously in relation to numbers, diversity of the audience, engagement, enthusiastic response, etc.). We have done so hoping these tallies will positively reflect on the value of the University of Alberta’s Arts and Humanities in Health and Medicine (AHHM) programme in contributing to the faculty, university, and larger community, to help ensure continuing support for the programme. Still, I had not previously given much thought to the importance of audience in relation to what we hope to achieve through our work in the medical/health humanities.
