ABSTRACT

Accurate, population-based estimations of the size and characteristics of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population can offer crucial information to a wide range of stakeholders. In this chapter, we present the most up-to-date information available on the demographic (age, gender, race/ethnicity, geography), socioeconomic (educational attainment, employment, income, financial hardship), and social (military status, marital status, family formation) characteristics of the LGBT-identified adult (aged 18+) population in the United States, through a series of descriptive secondary analyses of 2015–2017 Gallup Daily Tracking Survey data. Outcomes are first compared between LGBT adults and their non-LGBT peers, followed by an exploration of within-LGBT differences by gender and race/ethnicity and age, furthering understanding of how sexual orientation/gender identity intersects with other minority identities to impact sociodemographics.
