Abstract

In the aftermath of marriage being approved for same-sex couples, some LGBTQ organizations are struggling with a mission focus, and many are experiencing significant reductions in donations. As a result, LGBTQ organizations are considering mergers, closing their doors or simply floundering for a future-a possible slow death. Sustainability for non-profits has always been a challenge and is even more so now. The question is, with the changes and re-opening of discriminatory policies at the federal level (which is also spreading to state level legislation), will LGBTQ non-profits be able to clearly articulate Vision statements that offer solutions or actions to combat these proposed policies and in that process, re-focus their work, redefine their mission, and increase financial support? Will they take this opportunity to strengthen their organizations and improve sustainability through mergers, acquisitions, program expansion and building donor relationships?
