ABSTRACT

This chapter examines risk and crisis management in football, which begins by considering the nature of risk that is evident in the sport. Thereafter, the chapter adopts a business continuity approach to addressing risk. Using appropriate examples from both football and sport in general, the way in which risk can be managed is discussed via a four-step model. These steps are: identifying risks and hazards, identifying and assessing risk, risk assessment, and managing a crisis. The chapter concludes with a series of recommendations being made for what is an important, but sometimes neglected, aspect of the business and management of football.
